There is something magical about discovering just how alive the desert really is. At first glance, the landscape around Palm Springs can seem quiet and endless, but spend a day at the Living Desert Zoo and you quickly realize there is an entire world thriving beneath that desert sun.
Located in Palm Desert, just a short drive from Palm Springs, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is far more than a typical zoo. It is a place where wildlife, botanical beauty, conservation, and family fun all come together. From towering giraffes and powerful black rhinos to desert tortoises and colorful gardens, there is plenty here to fill an entire day.
Whether you’re visiting with kids, planning a family vacation, or simply looking for one of the best things to do in Palm Springs, here is what makes the Living Desert Zoo such a special experience.
The Animals You Shouldn’t Miss
The animals are, without question, the heart of the experience. The Living Desert Zoo focuses on species from desert environments around the world, giving visitors a chance to see just how remarkably different life can look in some of the planet’s harshest landscapes.
A few animals and habitats deserve a spot at the top of your list:
- Giraffes: Always a crowd favorite, these gentle giants are impossible to miss. The giraffe feeding experience is especially memorable, particularly for kids seeing one up close for the first time.
- Black Rhinos: The Rhino Savanna is one of the zoo’s most impressive areas. Watching these enormous animals move through the open habitat is a reminder of just how powerful and vulnerable wildlife can be.
- Wallabies and Australian Wildlife: Australian Adventures brings a completely different energy to the park, with wallabies, birds, and other fascinating species.
- Mexican Wolves and Mountain Lions: The North American section offers a closer look at some of the desert’s most elusive and powerful predators.
- Meerkats: Small, curious, and endlessly entertaining, meerkats have a way of making people stop and watch for much longer than planned.
- Desert Tortoises and Reptiles: These animals may move at their own pace, but they tell one of the most interesting stories about desert survival.
The best part is that the Living Desert animals are not simply there to be admired. Throughout the park, visitors can learn about conservation, adaptation, and the challenges these species face in the wild.
